Grid Variations

Sketches:

I was able to investigate compositional techniques based on pattern, symmetry, and asymmetry, all of which were derived from a grid-based origin, by taking on this project. The regular framework of the grid provides a logical foundation for the page, and my goal is to both embrace and push this structure. I want to create designs that achieve both unity and variation by finding a balance between structure and playfulness. The relationship between unity and variety greatly interests me. I value diversity, playfulness, and breaking from routine while appreciating the importance of unity through similarity, regularity, and cohesiveness. A key component of creating art that captures the viewer's attention is navigating this constant conflict between unity and variation. For this job, I started with a strong, repeating structured layout and then filled in the forms thoughtfully to provide a humorous element to the overall pattern design.

Final:

Panel #1: When forms are reflected on both sides of an axis, as in a composition that is divided vertically down the center, symmetrical equilibrium is achieved. Symmetry between the top and bottom of the design is produced by an axis shift.

Panel #2: Equilibrium between visual components that do not mirror one another on either side of an axis is produced by asymmetrical balancing. The resulting design can be almost chaotic, very dynamic, or extremely steady, depending on the degree of asymmetry.

Panel #3: Any visual element that is regularly repeated across a large region becomes a pattern. Basic visual units, or modules, form the foundation of many patterns.
